Photography Tip: Using the Grid

In my opinion, the rule of thirds is the single most important part of composing a solid photograph. The idea is that if you divide your frame into three sections horizontally and three sections vertically, you'll be left with a grid. Points of interest should be placed at the intersecting points of your imaginary lines.

Here's an example using my latest photo:

Now this of course doesn't have to be exact but try to follow it as closely as possible. You can see that I clearly intended to have the two tallest buildings anchor the image and they're anchoring the image because of where they're positioned in the frame. Everything else just falls into place around those two points. I'm also using lines to lead your eye through the image (notice how Park Avenue moves you all the way through to the sunset and Mt. St. Helens). That's a different point altogether though.

You can use this with portraits as well. Always aim to have your subject's eyes at one of the four intersecting corners. Never put them in the center! If anything, try to position main elements along the "thirds lines." This holds especially true for horizons. A dead-center horizon is a dead image. I guarantee you'll come away with much better photographs if you use this technique.

Some cameras even have grid displays built in to the viewfinder. If you have that option, turn it on and keep it on. I always have mine displayed as it helps me guide my compositions and I move quicker as a result.

I knew the skies were clear tonight so I went to my super awesome secret spot and came away with this photograph of downtown Portland. Mount St. Helens is visible at left in the sunset and you can even make out Mount Adams to the right. This is one heck of a view but honestly, I get nervous up in the hills. They're prone to landslides and if an earthquake were to happen while up there, ruh roh.

I didn't originally intend for this photograph to be a self portrait. I set out to get a good shot of the small, rocky island directly behind me. As you can see however, said island is rather nondescript and not capable of the wow factor. So, I improvised.

I love that moment when you're staring at a scene so dazzlingly enticing, you know you're coming away with an incredible photograph. This was certainly one of those moments and I'm pretty sure I got something good. :)

Everything about this scene came together perfectly for me. The path leading your eye through the image, toward the sunset and the wonderfully placed lighthouse. The picnic tables, how they gently turn toward the ocean. The trees anchoring the left side of the image. The softness of all the colors. ... I really like this one!

I can see why this waterfall is among the most photographed in the Columbia River Gorge. It's astonishingly beautiful.

Dramatic canyon walls give way to the river as Punchbowl Falls gently tumbles off a cliff, into a magnificent pool of crystal clear water. Moss-covered boulders, smooth river stones and the inescapable allure of cascading water; the quintessence of nature's best.

Birds Eye View

I was going to list the exposure settings for this one but I figured it'd almost be too confusing. You're actually looking at two photographs. The first is a cropped and enlarged version of one photograph and the pigeons sitting on the ledge is from another.

The cityscape was photographed at the top of the Teweles Seed Tower in the 5th Ward of Milwaukee while the pigeons were photographed along the rooftop deck of Hotel Astor between downtown and the East Side. I combined the photos with a bit of work in PhotoStudio.

This is my first "combined" photograph in the sense that it's two separate compositions. I've heard people tell me I'm "cheating" but I don't really see it that way... it's more along the lines of broadening the scope of my art - photography. Any thoughts?

Still Morning

I took this photograph in early September while walking along the shore of Lake Michigan during sunrise. What grabbed me about the scene was that while I could remember seeing countless pieces of driftwood, I had never seen an entire stump. The lighting helped too... the way the sun was glinting at the edge of the shoreline made for a near ideal photographic setting.

Abandoned

When I was a child, I knew this site as the "old houses". This is one of four extremely old, abandoned wooden shacks that - from what I can tell - used to be home to several families. I hadn't seen them in years so I decided to venture back and see what, if anything, was still there.

Only the one in this photograph is still standing. The other three have fallen victim to the elements. I'd imagine this particular house will follow suit shortly so I'm happy to have gotten one final glimpse into this world that once was.

Taking Flight

I know, I know. The art museum has been photographed about ten million times. Seriously though, I hardly ever take pictures of it anymore. Every once in a while though, I see a unique perspective I haven't seen before.

The fog over Milwaukee this past weekend was absolutely spectacular. With University Club Tower barely visible through the clouds and the ever-impressive wings of the museum opening, I couldn't help but take this photograph.

City Docks

This one's somewhat similar to an earlier photograph but I wanted to revisit the same place during the day for, in my opinion, a completely different perspective. While I don't like this one as much as my "Empty Docks" photo, I think it still makes the grade.

Sentra

I haven't owned a car in years but now I've got a 45 minute commute on my hands and public transportation isn't going to cut it anymore - at least for purposes of getting to work. So naturally, I bought a car.

I've been waiting for the right time to take a picture of it and the fog that covered downtown last Sunday was perfect for snapping a couple shots of the new ride.

Hanging On

Today I walked along the ice-coated beach at Big Bay Park for a while before stumbling upon this somewhat imposing natural sculpture.

While I'm not overly satisfied with how the photograph turned out, I impressed myself with the dedication it took to actually "get the shot." I was standing in three inches of ice-cold water.

Don't be too impressed though, my boots are waterproof.

Dungeon Light

My basement storage room seems to be the perfect setting for the opening scene of a horror film. Decaying walls, exposed wooden slats, an accumulation of dust, spider webs and hunks of missing wall combine to make for an interesting experience every time I walk in there.

Grant Park, just south of Milwaukee, is one of my favorite county parks in Milwaukee. The miles of trails, hilly topography and fantastic shoreline on the southern coast of Lake Michigan all make for an absolutely fantastic natural landscape.

Gator

Nearly every time I make my way down to the shores of Lake Michigan, there's something there that surprises me. I knew I'd find plenty of ice to photograph along the breakwater wall but this formation stuck out among the rest - literally. It looks so foreboding, menacing even... yet completely tranquil all the same.

The Creation: Revisited

Urban Backdrop

I took a short trip down to Chicago with my friend Blake a few days ago after work... we didn't have much time so we just walked around downtown near the Sears Tower and made our way through Millennium Park. The Submarine

Another photograph from my favorite skyline viewing spot - the McKinley Marina breakwater wall. When I took the photo, I meant to have the skyline be the focus of the shot but after processing, I realized how dominant the secondary rock wall was in the image. Hence, the reason why I titled it "the submarine." It does look like one, doesn't it?

Millenium Park

Riverfront Condos

I'm not exactly sure when it all started, but the condo craze hit Milwaukee full-force. Everywhere you look there are new condos going up that cost anywhere from $200,000 to almost $3 million. These particular condos are in the trendy third ward (on the left) and fifth ward (on the right) and will run you upwards of a half million dollars.

Milwaukee's freeway system is undergoing a massive face lift. The Marquette Interchange re-construction is a $1 billion project that started in 2004 and won't be finished for another two years. It was needed though... the original interchange was constructed in 1968 and was basically falling apart.

I'm pretty sure Milwaukee has more squirrels per capita than any other city in the world. Seriously... earlier today I was walking outside my office and in a space that couldn't have been more than 100x100 feet, I saw eight squirrels romping around. Eight.

The more the merrier I suppose... they're fun to watch and even more fun to take pictures of. I could've sworn they were posing for me as soon as I took my camera out.

My View

Almost every morning I wake up to the most beautiful sunrises over Lake Michigan. This view though, comes with a price - a higher than average rent. A rent I certainly don't mind paying because waking to a sight like this makes the monthly rent check worth every penny.

Empty Docks

All the boats in McKinley Marina have pulled out of the harbor to either go south or lay dormant in a parking lot for the winter, leaving an almost serene emptiness behind. In turn, the empty docks allow for such an amazing feeling of isolation despite clearly being an integral part of the urban fabric.

I'm not sure why, but I don't seem to make it down to Juneau Park Lagoon as often as I should. After all, the view across the pond is, at least for an urban nature lover like me, breathtaking. Milwaukee is by no means short on locales that provide such an urbanely natural oasis... which is one more reason to love this city.

the bow

Milwaukee was shrouded in fog a couple weeks ago and as a result, an eerie glow was cast over the city lights. Not one to miss a photographic opportunity, I strapped on my hiking boots, threw my camera bag over my shoulders and ventured out into the night. I soon found myself standing before the imposing "bow" of the art museum and couldn't help but have my camera lens point toward its inexorable beauty.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is, without a doubt, one of my favorite buildings in the world and the fact that it's a short walk from my apartment is nothing short of amazing. While I no doubt go through phases of "I'm sick of taking photographs of the art museum," I inevitably revert back to eying out new angles and testing new approaches to capturing an old friend on film (or in this case, digital image).

I've been pretty much obsessed with the McKinley Marina breakwater ever since I discovered it three years back. I'll never get sick of the views so every time I venture that way, I'm always sure to bring my cameras along. Thanks to my 24mm wide angle lens, this particular section of the breakwater allows for a fantastic view of the skyline - everything from the Allen Bradley Clock Tower on the left to Milwaukee's "second skyline" at the far right. If you've never been, please do yourself a favor and make your way out there... you won't be disappointed.

Take Off: Chicago

under the sea

The space between the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Summerfest grounds just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to Pier Wisconsin. Showcasing fish from the Great Lakes to the Carribean, aquariums abound at the east section of the building.

Go ahead and stare at the fish swimming above the glass tunnel or make your way through and have a go at petting a shark or stingray. Either way, this is definitely something to see.

DNA

I finally got to see Pier Wisconsin today! For those of you who don't know, Pier Wisconsin is the latest addition to Milwaukee's lakefront. Inside is the new Discovery World, an incredible array of aquariums, and the best views Milwaukee has to offer.

While the place still has a long way to go before it's truly ready, there's plenty to see. The DNA strand in this picture is over thirty feet tall and continuously shrinks and grows through the center of a three story spiral staircase.

The air's too cold to leave the windows open all night and leaves are already starting to fall from trees. The fallen leaves? Kilbourntown House (part two)

This photograph gives a more intimate perspective of Benjamin Church's Kilbourntown House. While obvious that time's taken its toll on this historic building, it's still a fantastic sight. If you're ever in the area, the home is open to the public and is completely furnished with mid-nineteenth century art and furniture.

Kilbourntown House (part one)

This home was relocated to Estabrook Park in the early 1900s but was originally built by Benjamin Church in 1844. Back then, Milwaukee was seperated into three settlements; Juneautown to the east of the river, Kilbourntown to the west, Walker's Point to the south. Two years after this home's construction, the rival towns grew too large to retain their independence and in January of 1846, they merged to form the city of Milwaukee.

invasive species

Just north of Milwaukee, 125 acres of fantastic park land straddle the Milwaukee River. It's an interesting combination of natural scenery and the human need to dominate the land. On all sides of Estabrook Park are enormous towers that cater to modern day necessities and while there, I can't help but be taken aback by how much we've changed this planet.

This is an older photo from last Spring taken during a cold, dreary day with a low cloud line. Although the tallest building in Milwaukee (US Bank) stands at just over 600 feet, rarely is the top shrouded in clouds.

Cranes are everywhere in the city these days. Apparently word's gotten out that Milwaukee is a fantastic place to call home. The building going up in the background is called First Place on the River - one of an impressive array of new condos going up everywhere from the third ward to the east side.

An extremely popular hangout, Rock Bottom Brewery's riverwalk patio plays host to hundreds of patrons each day. The restaurant is one of many small micro breweries in the city... all of which have fantastic and unique beer selections.

This photograph was taken during an extremely cold night in late February of this year. The mound in the foreground is simply a pile of gravel left over from the tearing down of the Park East Freeway. In the distance, gray clouds threaten snow but the Pfister & Vogel building stands unimpressed.
